“The Importance of Staying Quiet” By Lala Rukh
On view from September 18 to November 5, 2025, The Importance of Staying Quiet opens with a solo presentation of Lala Rukh’s early photographic archives from her time at the University of Chicago in the 1970s. Curated by Saira Ansari and Umer Butt, the exhibition revisits Rukh’s formative years, where her distinct sense of framing and structure began to take shape. These rarely seen images—filled with people, movement, and subtle narratives—reveal the early foundations of her later minimal abstractions. Decades later, they offer an intimate look into the beginnings of a radical visual language rooted in discipline, precision, and quiet strength.
